Ichthyofaunal survey of stretches of the Guariba and Rooselvelt Rivers, in Guariba State Park and Guariba Extractive Reserve, Madeira River basin, Amazonas, Brazil

Abstract: The fishes presented herein were collected in small streams, in channel of lagoons and in the main channel of the Guariba River, as well as in one tributary of the right bank of the Roosevelt River, both clear-water tributaries of Aripuanã River, Madeira River basin. Field work was carried out in November 2008, during the low water season. Sampling resulted in 3924 specimens belonging to 160 species distributed in 34 families, and seven orders. Eight species are recognized as new, two of which were recently de… Show more

“…Most noteworthy are those aimed at surveying the ichthyofauna (e.g. De Oliveira et al 2009; Barros et al 2011; Raiol et al 2012; Pedroza et al 2012), studies with focus on ecology that have tested the influence of environmental factors on the assemblage structure (e.g. Mendonça et al 2005; Espirito-Santo et al 2008; Dias et al 2009), studies on natural history (e.g.…”

“…There have been a limited number of studies in the area, particularly in headwater streams and their tributaries (Oyakawa & Menezes 2011, Krinski et al 2015. Many species of headwater streams are potentially geographically isolated (Lowe-McConnell 1999) that are specific to these areas (Krinski et al 2015), whereby headwaters may host very different fauna than exists in major rivers (Pedroza et al 2012, Volcan et al 2012. Based on previous experience and distribution maps from SpeciesLink, we can point out in this whor Astyanax lineatus, A. marionae, Creagrutus meridionalis, Oligosarcus perdido, Hypostomus basilisko, H. perdido and the cave fish Ancistrus formoso and Trichomycterus dali as exclusive species that inhabit headwaters.…”

“…These investigations identified 122 species from the Jamari River (Santos 1996), 133 from the Marmelos River (Camargo & Giarrizzo 2007), 447 from the Aripuanã and middle Madeira rivers (Py-Daniel et al 2007), 74 from the Belmont Stream (Araújo et al 2009), 160 from the Guariba and Roosevelt Rivers (Pedroza et al 2012), 189 from the Cuniã Lake (Queiroz et al 2013a), and 174 from the middle Madeira River (Torrente-Vilara et al 2011). A more comprehensive inventory identified 820 species along the Madeira River Basin (Queiroz et al 2013b).…”
