La procrastinación consiste en la tendencia generalizada a aplazar el inicio y/o finalización de tareas planificadas para ser realizadas en un tiempo determinado. Tal tendencia a la postergación suele acompañarse de malestar subjetivo y no sólo es una cuestión de baja responsabilidad y gestión del tiempo, sino que supone un verdadero problema de auto-regulación a nivel cognitivo, afectivo y conductual. En este artículo de revisión se proporciona una visión general de la investigación realizada sobre procrastinación en población española organizada en los siguientes apartados: marco conceptual de la procrastinación, instrumentos de medida, prevalencia y diferencias según edad, sexo y ocupación, modelos estructurales, tipos de procrastinación y correlatos (estilos de personalidad, perspectiva temporal, matutinidadvespertinidad).

Those who procrastinate, or favour deadline action, tend to engage in purposive and frequent delays in either starting or completing a task, leading to impaired achievements and distress (Jansen and Kristof-Brown, 2005; Prezepiorka et al., 2016). Waiting is a pervasive feature of organisational life and, as such, is likely to be important for a range of individual and organisational outcomes. Although extant research has shed light on the waiting experiences of diverse groups such as those suffering from illness, waiting in detention centres or queuing, there have been no previous attempts to theorise waiting specifically from the perspective of the employee. To address this gap, we draw on theories of temporality and waiting in fields such as consumer behaviour as well as the wider social sciences to develop the notion of ‘situated waiting’ which uncovers the complexity of the lived experience of waiting from the perspective of the employee. This experience is associated with factors at the level of the individual, the wait itself, and the broader waiting context. We outline the implications for future research on this hitherto hidden domain of the employee experience.

Preventing Procrastination Behaviours: Teaching Styles and Competence in University Students

Based on the self-determination theory, this study examines the relationship between students’ perceptions of their teachers’ teaching styles, satisfaction of the need for competence, and procrastination behaviours in university students. The sample was composed of 675 university students (442 men, 279 women; 4 did not indicate gender, Mage = 19.81 ± 2.26 years old), who completed the questionnaires assessing the variables of interest. The perception of an autonomy-supportive teaching style was positively associated with the satisfaction of the need for competence, in contrast to the perception of a controlling style. Satisfaction of the need for competence was also negatively related to procrastination behaviours. Likewise, the perception of a controlling teaching style was indirectly and positively associated—through competence need satisfaction—with procrastination; in addition, the perception of an autonomy supportive teaching style was negatively associated with procrastination. The model tested defends the importance of perceiving a high autonomy-supportive teaching style and a low controlling teaching style to avoid procrastination behaviours, with these relationships being mediated by the satisfaction of the student’s need for competence.
