Vital Signs: Deaths Among Persons with Diagnosed HIV Infection, United States, 2010–2018

Abstract: Background. Life expectancy for persons with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection who receive recommended treatment can approach that of the general population, yet HIV remains among the 10 leading causes of death among certain populations. Using surveillance data, CDC assessed progress toward reducing deaths among persons with diagnosed HIV (PWDH). Methods. CDC analyzed National HIV Surveillance System data for persons aged ≥13 years to determine age-adjusted death rates per 1,000 PWDH during 2010-201… Show more

“…PLHIV on antiretroviral treatment have a life expectancy approaching the general population and have experienced significant decreases in HIV/AIDS‐related mortality over the previous decades 68,69 . The key health challenges faced by PLHIV now relate to chronic diseases thought to stem from a combination of factors including chronic immune activation, coinfections and drug toxicities.…”

“…Extrapolating this trend, it is increasingly likely that the pool of HIV patients needing kidney transplant will continue to increase [6,7,29]. HIV related mortality is decreasing far more rapidly than non-HIV related deaths [43], thus there is expected to be a shortage of HIV D+ organs relative to demand.…”

“…1 Because of the advances in HIV treatment, the rate of HIV-related deaths among people aged !13 years fell by nearly one-half between 2010 and 2017. 2 HIV has itself become a chronic disease. Proper antiretroviral therapy (ART) allows PLWH a nearly normal life expectancy; however, significant chronic comorbidities, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), hyperlipidemia, osteoporosis, and mental illness, can shorten their lifespan.…”
