Tris-N-alkylpyridinium-functionalised cyclotriguaiacylene hosts as axles in branched [4]pseudorotaxane formation

Abstract: Tris-N-alkylpyridinium-functionalised cyclotriguaiacylene hosts as axles in branched [4]pseudorotaxane formationA series of [4]pseudorotaxanes composed of three-way axle threads based on the cyclotriguaiacylene family of crown-shaped cavitands and three threaded macrocyclic components has been achieved. These exploit the strong affinity for electron-poor alkyl-pyridinium units to reside within the electron-rich cavity of macrocycles, in this case dimethoxypillar

“…Since then, many CTV derivatives ( CTVs ) have been developed and their host–guest chemistry has been studied. The research on CTVs has continuously attracted considerable attention and has been applied in a range of research areas including the recognition of small organic molecules, fullerenes, carboranes, metal ions, and the construction of pseudorotaxanes, metallacycles, electronic modulators, organogels, and liquids crystals . In addition, CTVs are often used as building blocks to link each other or link with another C 3 symmetrical molecule to generate cryptophanes or hemicryptophanes, respectively, by covalent or reversible bonds, which can also be used to recognize small molecules, carbohydrates, cations, anions, even Xe atom, and act as a modulable molecular cavity or supramolecular catalysts .…”

“…Members of the CTV family have attracted considerable attention due to their usefulness for versatile applications ranging from separations, sensing, gels, and dendrimers to liquids crystals . Moreover, they have been also used as building blocks for the construction of supramolecular assemblies such as polymers, cubes, pseudorotaxanes, catenanes and capsules. , In particular, the combination of two CTV derivatives, linked together, gives molecular capsules, named cryptophanes, , which present remarkable recognitions properties toward small molecules like epoxydes and methane, , cations like choline and cesium, and anions. , They were also found to complex Xe atom, leading to promising tools for bioimaging . When the CTV moiety is connected with another C 3 symmetrical unit, it gives rise to hemicryptophanes .…”
