SYMBIODINIUM MICROADRIATICUM FREUDENTHAL, S. GOREAUII SP. NOV., S. KAWAGUTII SP. NOV. AND S. PILOSUM SP. NOV.: GYMNODINIOID DINOFLAGELLATE SYMBIONTS OF MARINE INVERTEBRATES 1

Abstract: The use of several independent biochemical, physiological, morphological, and behavioral assays has resulted in the reassessment of the taxonomy of the gymnodinioid symbionts of marine invertebrates which belong to the genus Symbiodinuim Freudenthal (Dinophyceae). The formal description of the type species S. microadriaticum Freudenthal is augmented, and three new species are introduced; S. goreauii, symbiotic with the Caribbean sea anemone Ragactis lucida; S. kawagutii, harbored by the Hawaiian stony coral Mo… Show more

“…The coccoid cells are limited by a cell wall which is probably cellulosic, as the walls stain positively with the fluorescent dye Calcofluor White, but not after treatment with cellulase (Markell et at., 1992). The cell wall is apparent in hospite and in culture (Figs 5,6) and the plasmalemma is within the cell wall (Trench & Blank, 1987;Banaszak et al, 1993;cf. F. J. R. Taylor, 1987).…”

“…Animals brought on board ship were homogenised in a Virtis blender in sterile-filtered seawater, and the algae separated as described previously (Trench & Blank, 1987). The isolated algae were inoculated into sterile ASP-SA (BIank, 1987).…”

“…in Clade A that appear to exist as non-symbiotic free-living taxa. Symbiodinium pilosum (synonymous with type A2; Trench & Blank, 1987), grown from culture, has yet to be detected in analyses of field-collected host samples (e.g. LaJeunesse, 2002) and does not successfully infect experimental aposymbiotic hosts (LaJeunesse, 2001;Xiang et al, 2013).…”

“…(gen. Freudenthal 1962) are the dominant zooxanthellae in tropical and equatorial waters (Kevin et al, 1969;Trench, 1993;Rowan, 1998). Only a handful of species have been named in the genus Symbiodinium [Freudenthal, 1962;Trench & Blank, 1987;Trench & Thinh, 1995 (emend. LaJeunesse, 2001; Trench, 1997], even though the genus includes numerous strains separated by large genetic distances (Rowan, 1998;LaJeunesse, 2001; RodriguezLanetty, 2003;Baker, 2003).…”
