Walking as urban communication: affordances and agency in public space in a semi-lockdown city

“…Augoyard's interviews with residents' of Arlequin, France of their daily walks demonstrated the significance of how the seemingly insignificant practices of everyday life can challenge the material affordances of the planned urban environment. The study highlighted the lived experiences and subjective uses of walking and demonstrated how meaning emerges from mobility (Tillous 2010). The study revealed how the way in which inhabitants perceive their environments is essentially subjective and socially constructed (Melhuish 2010) and how there is greater dynamic tension in the practice of walking than is allowed for in the prescriptions of urban planning (Stewart 2008).…”
