Staphylococcus aureusCausing Tropical Pyomyositis, Amazon Basin, Peru

Abstract: We studied 12 Staphylococcus aureus isolates causing tropical pyomyositis in the Amazon Basin of Peru. All isolates were methicillin-susceptible; 11 carried Panton-Valentine leukocidin–encoding genes, and 5 belonged to multilocus sequence type 25 and possessed an extensive set of enterotoxins. Our findings suggest sequence type 25 is circulating in tropical areas of South America.

“…The occurrence of PVL-producing strains does not exceed 2-5% among human routine clinical isolates in Europe, but can be higher in some other countries [111]. Associations with osteomyelitis and pyomyositis are now strongly suggested [117][118][119][120][121][122][123]. The locus encoding PVL is inside related bacteriophages [124][125][126][127]128].…”

“…Although the incidence of TP is still unclear in the tropics, it is an important cause of morbidity [26,27], including longer hospital stays (>10 days) [13,20]. The disease represents approximately 1% of all hospital admissions in the Amazonian region of Brazil or Peru [7,14]. Furthermore, it accounted for 4% (Gabon) to 27% (Benin) of S. aureus infections in Africa [28,29].…”

“…The amount of aspirated pus may reach 2000 ml in volume (Figure 1) [13]. Staphylococcus aureus, in particular methicillin‐susceptible S. aureus , is responsible for at least 40% and up to 100% (in the tropics) in some case reports [7‐8,14‐16]. Other bacterial species (i.e.…”
