Septoglomus titan, a new fungus in the Glomeraceae (Glomeromycetes) from Bahia, Brazil

Abstract: A new fungus of the Glomeraceae found in the rhizosphere of Agave sisalana is described under the epithet Septoglomus titan. It forms large glomerospores, (243–)265 × 325(–400) μm in diameter. They generally are subglobose and have three spore wall layers: a semi-persistent short lived sub-hyaline to yellow-brown outer layer (0.5–1.4 μm thick), an adherent smooth light-yellow to orange-brown middle layer (2.5–5.1 μm), and a laminate smooth thick orange brown to dark red brown innermost layer (12.8–19.2 μm). … Show more

“…While the spore wall of S. turnauae comprises four layers (Figs. 14-14), that of S. altomontanum and S. constrictum consists of two layers, and the spore wall of S. furcatum and S. titan is 3-layered (http://www.zor.zut.edu.pl/Glomeromycota/; Trappe 1977;Błaszkowski et al 2013;Goto et al 2013;Palenzuela et al 2013). Septoglomus altomontanum and S. constrictum do not differentiate spore wall layers 2 and 4 of S. turnauae.…”

“…Many new species with glomoid spore development was described during 90's years, exclusively based on available data sets, but this was considered a very difficult task based on limited morphological characters available in glomoid species (Goto et al 2012a). In 2001, new evidences based on molecular level, showed a larger diversification on AMF evolution, mostly in glomoid species (Schwarzott et al 2001), culminating in the proposition of Glomeromycota phylum (Schuessler et al 2001).…”

“…Among these, more than 20 were originally described from material collected in Brazil (Goto et al 2011(Goto et al , 2013Mello et al 2012Mello et al , 2013Marinho et al 2014). Another significant change occurred in Zygomycota, disregarded for being polyphyletic (Hibbett et al 2007).…”
