North‐Atlantic records of Schizymenia dubyi extend along the eastern shores of the North Atlantic from Morocco to southern Britain and Ireland, and the species is also recorded from Iceland. A study was undertaken to confirm the identity of the specimens from Iceland that were geographically separate from the main distribution of S. dubyi and in contrast to other species of the genus did not have gland cells. We analyzed rbcL and COI molecular sequence data from Icelandic specimens and compared the results with those for Schizymenia specimens available in GenBank. For both markers, Schizymenia was shown to be a monophyletic genus. The Icelandic specimens were clearly genetically distinct from S. dubyi and formed a well‐supported clade with Schizymenia species from the Northern Pacific. Based on these results, we have described a new species, Schizymenia jonssonii, which can be distinguished by molecular phylogeny, its lack of gland cells and by being strictly intertidal. Crustose tetrasporophytes with identical COI and rbcL sequences were found at the same locations as foliose plants. Schizymenia apoda is reported for the first time in the UK, its identity confirmed by rbcL sequence data. In light of these findings, it is likely that by further molecular analysis of the genus Schizymenia in the north‐eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean, a higher diversity of Schizymenia spp. will be discovered in this region.

Hydroclimate variation of the northwest Mexico during the late Pleistocene and Holocene is an active area of debate, with uncertainty in the nature and sources of precipitation. Previous research has inferred the influences of winter storms, summer monsoonal rain and autumn tropical cyclones. The impacts on regional and local ecosystems, however, are not well constrained. Here, we investigate the response of lacustrine and terrestrial habitats of the Santiaguillo Basin in the Chihuahua Desert (Mexico) to hydrological changes occurring since the late last glacial. Biomarkers from the sediments reflect variable input of organic matter (OM) from algal and bacterial biomass, aquatic microfauna and surrounding vegetation, revealing distinct stages of ecosystem adaption over the last 27 cal ka. Based on previously published and new data, we show that a perennial productive lake was present during the late glacial and it persisted until 17.5 cal ka BP. Coinciding with Heinrich event 1, OM supply from deteriorating wetland soils may have been caused by early dry conditions. Further phases of increasing aridity and a shrinking water body drove changing OM quality and biomarker composition during the early and mid-Holocene. A pronounced shift in biomarker distributions at 4 cal ka BP suggests that the supply of plant litter from resinous trees and grasses increased, likely reflecting the establishment of modern vegetation. Our results illustrate the potential of biomarker applications in the area, adding to the evidence of hydroclimate variability and enabling reconstructions of local ecosystem dynamics.

RESUMEN.En este trabajo se propone una lista de 14 especies de macroalgas exóticas en la costa de Chile, además de otras tres especies que, siendo nativas a la costa chilena, han sido introducidas en sectores fuera de su rango natural de distribución. Este listado fue realizado depurando catastros publicados con antelación, e incorporando nuevos reportes. La distribución de macroalgas exóticas no es homogénea a lo largo de la costa, sino que se concentra en sectores cercanos a puertos y centros de cultivos. La mayoría de las especies muestra una distribución bastante acotada y sólo cuatro tienden a ser invasoras (i.e., incrementan su rango de distribución a través del tiempo). Sin embargo, considerando que la mayoría de las introducciones son recientes (últimos 60 años), y la amplitud del rango de distribución se relaciona positivamente con el tiempo de residencia de las especies en la costa chilena, se sugiere que algunas de estas especies podrían estar en etapa de expansión, lo que explicaría su localizada distribución. Este trabajo no sólo actualiza la información relacionada con macroalgas exóticas en la costa chilena, sino que además permite entender el proceso de invasión de estos organismos, a través del análisis de los patrones descritos en estos sistemas. Exotic seaweed in the Chilean coast: spatial and temporal patterns in the invasion processABSTRACT. In this paper we propose a checklist of 14 species of exotic seaweeds on the Chilean coast, and three species which, being native to the Chilean coast, have been introduced in areas outside their natural range. This list was compiled from previously published checklist, debugged the misidentified records, and incorporating new ones. The distribution of exotic seaweeds is not homogeneous along the coast, but it is concentrated in areas near ports and aquaculture centers. Most species display a fairly bounded distribution, and only four tend to invade (i.e., increase its range of distribution over time). However, considering that most introductions are recent (the last 60 years) and the positive relationship between amplitude of the distribution range and residence time of species on the Chilean coast, we suggest that some of these species may be in an expansion phase, which would explain its restricted distribution. This work not only updates the information related to exotic seaweed on the Chilean coast, but also allows us to understand the invasion process, through the analysis of the patterns described in these systems.
