Schisandra chinensisPrevents Alcohol-Induced Fatty Liver Disease in Rats

Abstract: Schisandra chinensis (SC), a traditional herbal medicine, has been prescribed for patients suffering from various liver diseases, including hepatic cancer, hypercholesterolemia, and CCl₄-induced liver injury. We investigated whether SC extract has a protective effect on alcohol-induced fatty liver and studied its underlying mechanisms. Rats were fed with ethanol by intragastric administration every day for 5 weeks to induce alcoholic fatty liver. Ethanol treatment resulted in a significant increase in alanine … Show more

“…Previous reports have demonstrated that the extracts of Schisandra chinensis are capable of ameliorating oxidative stress in CCl 4 -treated mice [26] or in rats subjected to heat stress [25]. More importantly, other groups have shown that Schisandra chinensis exerts protective effects on liver function either in rats or in humans [27][28][29]. Therefore, it is reasonable to hypothesize that extracts of Schisandra chinensis protect against alcohol-induced liver injury through its antioxidant activity.…”

“…In addition, Schisandra chinensis has been reported to exert protective effects on liver diseases. Park and colleagues showed that Schisandra chinensis prevents alcohol-induced fatty liver disease in rats [27]. Another report found that gomisin A isolated from Schisandra chinensis protects against CCl 4 -induced hepatic injury [28].…”

“…Modern scientific research show that SQDBT can relieve chronic viral liver diseases by reducing inflammatory processes and controlling serum alanine transaminase (ALT) levels, thus it may prevent liver cancer development [16]. Other TCM herbal extracts or isolates such as the Salvia Miltiorrhiza extracts, Schisandra chinensis extracts, silymarin, glycyrrhizin, baicalein and baicalin may prevent liver cancer by relieving chronic liver diseases associated hepatic steatosis and fibrosis [17][18][19][20][21].…”
