Salmonella infection in cattle in Great Britain, 2003 to 2008

Abstract: Surveillance data for clinical disease in cattle in Great Britain due to Salmonella infections were analysed for the period 2003 to 2008 in order to describe seasonality and to investigate possible associations between Salmonella diagnoses and other variables such as region, climate, age and production type. A clear seasonal pattern was shown for Salmonella infection, coinciding with the second half of the year. The incidence of Salmonella Dublin and Salmonella Typhimurium was highest in the west of the countr… Show more

“…A previous study has documented an increase in outbreaks of Salmonella in the late summer/autumn period (Carrique-Mas et al, 2010). However, this finding was not replicated in this study where no association between both testing positive for and incidence of Salmonella with sample date was detected.…”

“…Previous dairy herd studies have identified herd size, purchase of animals, and calving season as risk factors for Salmonella (Evans and Davies, 1996;Vaessen et al, 1998;Carrique-Mas et al, 2010), N. caninum (Björkman, et al, 1996;Ould-Amrouche et al, 1999;Schäres et al, 2004;Dubey et al, 2007), and L. hardjo (Leonard et al, 2004;Van Schaik et al, 2002;Ryan et al, 2012).…”

“…Risk factors specific for presence and exposure to Salmonella in dairy herds include geographical region, the prevalence of Salmonella positive herds in the surrounding geographical region, importation of farm manure, concurrent infection with liver fluke, use of calving facilities to house sick animals, and access of birds or rodents to animal feed supplies (Evans and Davies, 1996;Vaessen et al, 1998;Wedderkoop et al, 2001;Carrique-Mas et al, 2010).…”

“…O sorovar Thyphimurium é frequentemente associado a enterites que afetam bezerros jovens, causando diarreia aguda grave. O sorovar Dublin é mais relacionado a infecções sistêmicas em bezerros, geralmente não associadas à diarreia e, ocasionalmente, causa aborto em vacas prenhes (Anderson & Blanchard 1989, Mohler et al 2009, Carrique-Mas et al 2010.…”
