Ocimum basilicumaffects tracheal responsiveness, lung inflammatory cells and oxidant–antioxidant biomarkers in sensitized rats

Abstract: The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Ocimum basilicum (O. basilicum) was shown previously. In the present study, the effect of O. basilicum on tracheal responsiveness (TR) to methacholine and ovalbumin (OVA), bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) levels of oxidant-antioxidant biomarkers as well as total and differential white blood cell (WBC) in sensitized rats was examined. Six groups of rats including control (group C), sensitized rats to OVA (group S), S groups treated with three concentrations of… Show more

“…The effect of the extract on immunological changes including IFN-γ, IL-4, IgE, PLA2 and TP levels and the ratio of IFN-γ/IL4 as an index of Th1/Th2 as well its effect on pathological changes were shown in the current study. In previous studies, the effect of O. basilicum extract on depression like behavior, tracheal responsiveness, lung inflammatory cells and oxidant-antioxidant biomarkers in the OA-sensitized rats was shown [23, 25, 26] which support the findings of the present studies. However, this study has some limitations such as the assessment of qualitative and quantitative extract composition which should be examined in further studies.…”

“…Previously, increased total WBC and neutrophil and eosinophil percentage in lung lavage of OVA-sensitized rats were shown [23,26]. Increased percentages of eosinophils were also demonstrated in sensitized animals and asthmatic patients that correlated with the severity of asthma and supported the results of the present study [27].…”

“…Total WBC was counted in 1 ml BALF after staining with Turk solution in duplicate using a hemocytometer as previously described [22]. Under light microscopy, differential WBC was determined using morphological criteria by counting 100 cells and calculating the percentage of each cell type in a smear of the cells stained with Wright-Giemsa [23].…”
