Nostoc sphaeroids Kütz ameliorates hyperlipidemia and maintains the intestinal barrier and gut microbiota composition of high‐fat diet mice

Abstract: Hyperlipidemia is associated with chronic inflammation and intestinal dysbiosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effect of Nostoc sphaeroids Kütz (NO) on diet‐induced hyperlipidemia in mice. Experimental animals received a high‐fat diet (HFD) for 4 weeks, then an HFD supplemented with 2.5% or 7.5% NO for 6 weeks. HFD‐fed mice exhibited a significant increase in serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low‐density lipid cholesterol, and a decrease in high‐density lipid cholesterol… Show more

“…The F/B ratio has been widely accepted to have an important influence in maintaining normal intestinal homeostasis. Previous studies showed that obesity and hyperlipidemia were associated with an increased ratio of F/B (44,45). Our results were in accordance with studies in animal models which found that plant-derived n-3 PUFA could reduce the abnormal ratio of F/B and improve gut dysbiosis (46,47).…”

“…Moreover, the polysaccharide is mostly β -1, 3 and β -1, 4 glycoside bonds, which are not easy to be absorbed by the intestinal tract, and it has strong moisture absorption, moisture retention, and high relative viscosity [ 9 , 13 , 14 ]. Studies have shown that NSKP has rich biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering effects [ 15 17 ]. However, there are a few studies on moistening intestines and the laxative effect of NSKP.…”

“…Previous studies in our laboratory have proved that Nostoc sphaeroids Kütz can improve liver injury and intestinal microorganisms. These improvements mechanisms are related to the inhibition of the expression of inflammatory factors (Wei et al, 2019(Wei et al, , 2020. The polysaccharide content in Nostoc sphaeroids Kütz is as high as 38%.…”
