Nepenthes section Insignes in Indonesia, with two new species

Abstract: A review of new data relating to Nepenthes insignis in Indonesia indicates that three taxa in section Insignes, not one, are present in New Guinea. One of these, endemic to the limestone of the island of Biak, is formally named as Nepenthes biak and assessed as Critically Endangered; the other, from limestone of the Raja Ampat islands is provisionally distinguished as Nepenthes sp. Raja Ampat, since only images are available.

“…Insignes, and N. nigra, N. pitopangii and N. undulatifolia from sect. Tentaculatae, confirming the previous morphologically-based sectional placement of these species (Cheek et al, 2018Cheek and Jebb, 2016a;Nerz et al, 2011bNerz et al, , 2011a). The affinities of N. undulatifolia were considered unclear when the species was described (Nerz et al, 2011b) but was included in sect.…”

“…Tentaculatae and Insignes are resolved as successively sister to the rest of Clade 2 with maximal support. Both the Tentaculatae and Insignes clades were described as sections based on morphology (Cheek et al, 2018;Cheek and Jebb, 2016a;Danser, 1928). It is notable that these sections both range across Wallace's line.…”
