Neisseria gonorrhoeaeAntimicrobial Susceptibility Surveillance — The Gonococcal Isolate Surveillance Project, 27 Sites, United States, 2014

Abstract: Antimicrobial susceptibility surveillance is conducted to guide development of treatment recommendations for effective therapy and prevention of complications from and transmission of gonorrhea. Federal agencies can use GISP data to develop national treatment recommendations and set research and prevention priorities. Local and state health departments can use GISP data to determine allocation of STD prevention services and resources, guide prevention planning, and communicate best treatment practices to healt… Show more

“…For example, molecular detection of susceptibility to fluoroquinolones might currently be useful to spare use of cephalosporins and/or macrolides in USA and Europe, where ciprofloxacin susceptibility is at around 20%25 and 50%,26 respectively, but completely pointless in, for example, China, Korea and Vietnam, where resistance rates are mainly 100% 27–29…”

“…1 Left untreated, gonorrhea can cause adverse reproductive health outcomes in women, such as pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. 2 Prevention of gonorrhea sequelae depends on timely diagnosis and effective antimicrobial treatment. 2 The bacterium that causes gonorrhea, Neisseria gonorrhoeae , has developed resistance to multiple classes of antimicrobials over the past 60 years 3 ; formerly recommended therapies penicillin, tetracycline, and fluoroquinolones are no longer recommended for treatment.…”

“…Laboratory and epidemiologic data collected through GISP are analyzed to estimate the proportion of isolates with resistance or decreased susceptibility in key populations; findings are disseminated annually (15). In 2014, for example, data from GISP demonstrated increases in the prevalence of reduced susceptibility to azithromycin and to cefixime.…”
