MALE GAMETOPHYTE DEFECTIVE 2, Encoding a Sialyltransferase‐like Protein, is Required for Normal Pollen Germination and Pollen Tube Growth in Arabidopsis

Abstract: Sialyltransferases (SiaTs) exist widely in vertebrates and play important roles in a variety of biological processes. In plants, several genes have also been identified to encode the proteins that share homology with the vertebrate SiaTs. However, very little is known about their functions in plants. Here we report the identification and characterization of a novel Arabidopsis gene, MALE GAMETOPHYTE DEFECTIVE 2 (MGP2) that encodes a sialyltransferase-like protein. MGP2 was expressed in all tissues including po… Show more

“…S5A at JXB online). To confirm this result, the GFP–CSLD1/4 plants were crossed with transgenic lines expressing the Golgi marker protein RPA (Song et al , 2006; Deng et al , 2010) with a C-terminal-fused red fluorescent tag, DsRed2, under the control of the pollen-specific LAT52 promoter (RPA–DsRed2). In mature pollen grains, as shown in Fig.…”

“…These include an Arabidopsis thaliana homolog (AT1G08660) of mgv1a005647m, a glycosyl transferase for which mutants are known to show reduced pollen tube germination and growth rates [72], along with an A. thaliana homolog (AT1G14420) of mgv1a006379, a pectate lyase-like gene first characterized in tomato (LAT59) and notable for studies of it's pollen-specific promoter element [73]. In addition, they include an M. guttatus homolog (mgv1a000017m) of A. thaliana KINGY POLLEN (KIP; AT5G649680) [74].…”

“…Many pollen germination and pollen tube growth mutants have been identified recently. The male gametophyte defective2 (mgp2) mutant shows inhibited pollen germination (Deng et al, 2010). FIMBRIN5 (FIM5) is needed in actin cytoskeleton organization in pollen grains and pollen tubes.…”
