Thalictrum punduanum Wall. is extensively dispersed in northern India and grows on damp rocky slopes among mosses. Many different diseases have been successfully treated using potent herbal remedies from the genus Thalictrum. The essential oil from the plant species was extracted using a steam distillation procedure, and the resulting oil was analyzed using GC-FID and GC/MS techniques. The chromatogram showed more than seventy peaks, however, forty-six compounds were identified, constituting 85.3% of the oil. n-Nonadecanol (21.1%), phytol (17.1%), 6R,7R bisabolene (9.1%), bifloratriene (7.6%) and 6,10,14 trimethylpentadecan-2-one (6.1%) were found to be the major constituents of the essential oil. The essential oil of T. punduanum showed the dominance of oxygenated diterpenes and nonterpenic constituents. The antibacterial activity of the oil was tested by using the standard method (disc diffusion) against seven animal and three plant pathogens. The oil exhibited good to moderate activity against a majority of the pathogens. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was recorded at a minimum concentration of 31.25μL/mL against Xanthomonas phaseoli and Enterococcus faecalis, and the oil has good potential as an antimicrobial against these two pathogens.

In this review, we have studied about Selinum vaginatum. We studied about the essential oil which was extracted from the roots of this plant and also we know about the medicinal uses of S. vaginatum. This plant is found in Northwest Himalayan region including the Kashmir, also in Kailash Parvat and in Himachal. This plant particularly found in specific region of Himachal including the Parvati Valley and also in Lahaul district. We performed the extraction of essential oil using gas chromatography technique, which was also examined through flame ionization detector and a capillary column. We also performed the mass spectroscopy technique using which the molecular weight is obtained. In macroscopic study, we studied about the organoleptic properties, which include color, taste, and odor. In microscopy, we performed T.S of a part of the drug in which we observed that its bark contains 4–8 layers. It contains terpene, coumarin, volatile, and other compounds included valerenic acid. The pharmacological actions of S. vaginatum are antibacterial, antioxidants, antifungal, anticonvulsant, anticarcinogenic, antiviral, and vasodilator action. This herb was used traditionally in the treatment of various neurological disorders including mental weakness, epilepsy, convulsions, and hysteria. It is used to treat painful toothache, and according to tribal people, the entire plants were kept in houses to get rid of any evil spirit.

The susceptibility of Helicobacter pylori to three essential oils (EOs), 12 naturally occurring monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated and phenolic monoterpenes and three reference antibiotics were studied. Classification and comparison of essential oils and monoterpenes on the basis of their chemical composition and antibacterial activity were made by the utilization of principal component analyses (PCA) and agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC). The most abundant compound in the Thymus glabrescens Willd. and Thymus pulegioides L. EOs is geraniol (33.8% and 52.5%), while the main constituent in Satureja kitaibelii Wierzb. ex Heuff. EO is limonene (16,1%). The compound that was the most active against H. pylori was carvacrol. EOs of T. glabrescens and S. kitaibelii exhibit higher antibacterial ability in comparison with all monoterpenes, except carvacrol, probably based on the concept of synergistic activity of essential oil components. PCA separated essential oils based on chemical composition and explain 96.5% of the total variance in the first two principal components. Essential oils, phenolic monoterpenes and two antibiotics were classified in the same sub-cluster within AHC analyses. EOs of T. glabrescens and S. kitaibelii can be used to treat infections caused by H. pylori, as a potentially effective, cheap and safe natural products. Further research of antibacterial activity of selected monoterpenes, essential oils and standard antibiotic combinations, as well as clinical study are required.
