“…The viability of HaCaT cells exposed to Au NMs or Au NM-Cream at various surface area dosages (equivalent to Au content) was measured by the CCK-8 assay kit (Beyotime, Shanghai, China). Considering that the daily usages of facial cream and face area are 2 g and 600 cm 2 [21,24], respectively, the daily surface area dosage of facial cream was calculated to be 3.33 mg cm −2 . Based on the Au content (1.85 mg kg −1 cream) in facial cream, the daily surface area dosage was 6.1 ng cm −2 .…”

“…Recently, pilot studies have reported to successfully separate Au nanosheets from commercial cosmetics and investigate their toxicity on human keratinocytes and guinea pig skin [20,21]. It was found that cosmetic cream enhanced the cytotoxicity of Au nanosheets in HaCaT keratinocytes, which is ascribed to the toxic ingredients of cosmetic cream.…”

“…It has been demonstrated that gold nanoparticles are able to reduce wrinkles [56], improve skin brightening, promote skin healing, have a cleansing effect, reduce inflammation and ROS damage, provide anti-bacterial action, slow down collagen depletion [57] and elastin degradation [58]. Nevertheless, concerns have been expressed about a safe use of gold-based nano-cosmeceuticals, since it has been demonstrated that Au nanosheets in cosmetic creams are able to quantitatively permeate into the skin epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous layer after a ten-day cutaneous exposure [139]. The same study also showed that Au nanosheets are not able to enter the systemic circulation, though, but can decrease the cell viability of keratinocytes and induce a low level of apoptosis or necrosis of keratinocytes and skin dermal fibroblasts.…”

“…Skin has been generally considered as a strong barrier to the penetration of nanoparticles in the body, although different papers recently appeared in the literature showing that this is not always true [139]. Damaged skin, such as in burns and wounds, is more penetrable by NPs as compared to healthy derma, therefore the formulation of wound dressings and nano-cosmetics should be carefully designed and thoroughly tested in the respect of nanotoxicity [146].…”

“…[ 217 ] Moreover, even in these organs Ag NPs can enter in specific cells such as renal tubular epithelial cells and hepatic cells. [ 218 ] In another interesting study, Ag NPs were compared with TiO 2 NPs for their possible disruption BBB model in vitro. It was noticed that Ag ions induced inflammatory cytokines and had less cell‐to‐cell permeability than Ag NPs.…”
