In VivoBiocompatibility and Degradation Studies of Polyhydroxyoctanoate in the Rat: A New Sealant for the Polyester Arterial Prosthesis

Abstract: The present study examined the biocompatibility and degradation properties of poly (beta-hydroxy octanoate) (PHO) as an impregnation substrate on arterial prostheses. PHO-impregnated polyester grafts sterilized by ethylene oxide (EO) or gamma (gamma) radiation, and polyester Dacron(R) prostheses impregnated with fluoropolymer, gelatin, or albumin were implanted subcutaneously in rats for periods ranging from 2 to 180 days. The biocompatibility was assessed by quantifying the alkaline and acid phosphatase secre… Show more

“…The inflammatory reaction was categorized in four different groups: inflammatory cell population, collagen synthesis, thickness of the capsule, and new blood vessel formation named as neovascularization. Interpretation of inflammatory reaction for different polymer samples was performed by using a modified scale of Marios et al [32] which was initially introduced to the literature via our previous study [30]. The thickness of the capsule surrounding the polymer sample was measured from four different standardized areas, one on each side of the implant.…”

“…The tissue responses to native aponeurosis and apo‐collagenwere assessed according to a modified semiquantitative scoring method 40, 41. The parameters and the score criterions were summarized below: (1) the numbers of inflammatory cells, including neutrophils, macrophages, lymphocytes and giant cells were counted per field (10 × 40).…”

“…The degradation behavior (Marois et al 1999a(Marois et al , b, 2000 of the mcl-PHA PHO has been examined on solution-cast PHO films during hydrolysis incubation. PHO cast films underwent a simple hydrolysis degradation process characterized by water absorption, gradual molecular weight decrease, and negligible mass loss after 24 months of incubation.…”
