In vitro growth characteristics of human odontogenic keratocysts and dentigerous cysts

Abstract

Ode M, In vitro growth eharaeteristics of htiman odontogenic keratocysts and dentigetous cysts. J Oral Pathol 1986: 15: 143-145, Using an in vitro system, the growth characteristics and enzyme histoehemieal properties of 3 odontogenic ketatocysts and 3 dentigerous cysts were studied. It was found that the epithelial cells of the keratoeysts but not of the dentigetous eysts grew in vitro. Furthermote, the epithelial-like cells of the keratocysts showed the satne activities of acid phosphatase and NADH-diaphorase in vitro as earlier described //; vivo. These enzymatic aetivities were inereased in epithelial-like cells close to prolifetating fibroblast-like eells, indicating a close relationship between these two cell types. The results are discussed in the light of tbe known clinical behaviour of the keratoeyst and eertain eonehisions are also drawn concerning the suggested neoplastic potential of the keratocyst.
