In vitro evaluation of the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of DIMBOA [2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-2H-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one]

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the natural cyclic hydroxamic acid: 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-2H-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one (DIMBOA). Antioxidant activity of the isolated DIMBOA was examined using DPPH, FRAP and ABTS tests. It was found that DIMBOA exhibits a potent free-radical scavenging activity and a weaker iron (III) ions reducing activity. Antimicrobial activity against selected G(+), G(-) bacterial strains and against yeasts-like reference strai… Show more

“…BXs were also analysed for antimicrobial properties against the model organisms for human pathogens Escherichia coli (Migula 1895) Castellani & Chalmers 1919, Staphylococcus aureus Rosenbach, 1884, and Candida albicans (C.P.Robin) Berkhout, as well as the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae Meyen ex E.C. Hansen [85][86][87]. Antimicrobial activity required concentrations above the millimolar range.…”

“…12,13,23 In addition to the defensive effect against phytopathogens, Bex-derived compounds have also shown activity against microorganisms of medical interest. [14][15][16][17] Bravo et al 15 reported that the Bexs benzoxazolin-2-one (BOA), 2-hydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (HBOA) and 2,4-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIBOA) exhibit antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans at concentrations of 500 μg/mL, and against Escherichia coli at a concentration of 1,000 μg/mL according to microdilution broth assays. The compound, 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA; at a concentration of 2 mg/disk), is active against the bacteria Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, S. aureus methicillin-resistant and E. coli extended-spectrum β-lactamases produced by disc diffusion.…”
