In vitro evaluation of color and translucency reproduction of maxillofacial prostheses using a computerized system

Abstract: PURPOSEAccurate color matching of maxillofacial prostheses to skin is important for esthetics. A computerized color matching system specific to human skin has recently been developed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy in color and translucency matching of the computerized color matching system across different skin colors.MATERIALS AND METHODSThe silicone was colored to simulate 28 different skin colors (n=5) to serve as “target skin colors”. Using a spectrocolorometer (e-skin), color code… Show more

“…It has extensive biomedical applications, primarily in the prosthodontics and dental industries. [24][25][26][27][28] More recently, it has been successfully applied to measurements of erythema in patients receiving ultraviolet phototherapy for vitiligo and psoriasis. 29 The delta-E is a single number, which represents the "difference or distance" between two colors (Figure 4).…”

“…Developed initially in 1976 as an industrial tool for color assessment, it has been extensively revised and reformulated to improve accuracy, regardless of lighting conditions. It has extensive biomedical applications, primarily in the prosthodontics and dental industries 24–28 . “…Pigments are added to the silicone elastomer material to color the maxillofacial prosthesis material (65). Han Y. et al (66) studied the color stability of pigmented maxillofacial silicone elastomer, nano -TiO2, ZnO, and CeO2 were used as opacifiers for the silicone elastomer, and TiO2 and CeO2 caused the least color change.…”
