Fridericia platyphylla (Cham.) L.G. Lohmann root extract exerts cytotoxic and antiproliferative effects on gastric tumor cells and downregulates BCL-XL, BIRC5, and MET genes

Abstract: Fridericia platyphylla (Cham.) L.G. Lohmann (FP) has cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. We aimed to characterize the cytotoxic and antiproliferative effects of FP extract on normal (GAS) and tumor-derived (ACP02 and HepG2) cell lines. The effective concentrations (EC50s) by tetrazolium bromide assay (MTT) were 56.16, 43.68, and 42.57 µg mL−1 and 69.38, 41.73, and 52.39 µg mL−1 by neutral red assay for GAS, ACP02, and HepG2 cells, respectively. The extract decreased nuclear division indices… Show more

“…MNP01 cells are a non-neoplastic gastric model used in the hazard assessment of some vegetal extracts and phytochemicals. 30,31,33 The ACP02 cancer cell line has been widely used as a model for the study of gastric cancer. [34][35][36] The cytotoxicity of the SM leaf extract was determined using the colorimetric MTT assay, which measures enzyme activity, predominantly succinate dehydrogenase.…”

“…Considering the cytotoxic and antiproliferative activity recently described for the crude hydroethanolic extract of F. platyphylla in hepatocellular carcinoma and gastric adenocarcinoma cells [10], this study is aimed at investigating the in vitro antiproliferative effects of the crude hydroethanolic extract derived from F. platyphylla roots, hydromethanolic subfraction (containing 59.3% Brachydin E and 40.7% Brachydin F), and isolated compounds (Brachydin E and Brachydin F) in glioblastoma, lung, prostate, and colorectal human tumor cell lines. The isolated compounds from this species fit into a rare-structure group of dimeric flavonoids, because they are a result of the union of two chalcones, which highlight the importance of the present study.…”

“…) LG Lohmann), belonging to the Bignoniaceae Family and to the genus Arrabidaea, it is a native bush of the Brazilian Cerrado, with 1.0-2.0 m height, popularly known as "cervejinha do campo", and used in the southeast and northeast of Brazil for the treatment of kidney stones and painful joints (arthritis). This species has been studied from a chemical and pharmacological point of view (Yanagizawa & Maimoni-Rodella, 2007;Rocha et al, 2011 andRodrigues et al, 2017;Serpeloni et al, 2020;Bertanha et al, 2020).…”
