Enc1 expression in the chick telencephalon at intermediate and late stages of development

Abstract: In this work we studied the regional expression pattern of the Enc1 gene in the chick embryo telencephalon at intermediate and late stages of development, bearing on architectonic groupings and boundaries of current interest. In general, the Enc1 signal shows a markedly heterogeneous areal pattern of expression throughout the telencephalon; this corroborates data on new pallial and subpallial structures defined recently in the stereotaxic chick brain atlas of Puelles et al. (2007. The chick brain in stereotaxi… Show more

“…Such connections would have been lost as the neocortex finally emerged in early mammals. Birds are known to have lost most of their pallial olfactory target areas [Reiner and Karten, 1985;Puelles et al, 2007;García-Calero and Puelles, 2009], whereas the primitive telencephalon of lampreys is almost completely dominated by olfactory input [Puelles, 2001]. Loss or transformation of initially olfactory pallial areas is therefore an old trend in pallial evolution.…”

“…The hippocampal region has been variously described in birds as it pertains to the medial pallium [Garcia-Calero and Puelles, 2009]. In the pigeon, the dorsomedial hippocampal formation has been suggested to be homologous to Ammon's horn [Atoji and Wild, 2004], while in passerine birds the dorsomedial area was suggested to be homologous to dentate gyrus and the ventral subdivision homologous to Ammon's horn [Szekely, 1999].…”

“…A similar consideration applies to the caudal part of nidopallium, which is an associative area [Garcia-Calero and Puelles, 2009]: at variance with the rodent-associative cortex [Mucignat-Caretta and Caretta, 2002], the caudal nidopallium presents persistent, intensely labeled RI aggregates that never showed the diffuse type of labeling observed in rodent cortex.…”

“…the hippocampus proper and the parahippocampal area (PHi), are two telencephalic regions that play a major role in memory tasks. In recent years, the PHi has been well described in chickens [Redies et al, 2001, Kovjanic andRedies, 2003;Puelles et al, 2007;Garcia-Calero and Puelles, 2009]. The PHi is a radial domain adjacent to the hippocampus proper.…”

“…The PHi finally makes contact with the piriform cortex in the caudolateral pole of the telencephalon. The PHi is subdivided into 5 radial subdomains which show a cortical structure [Redies et al, 2001, Kovjanic andRedies, 2003;Puelles et al, 2007;Garcia-Calero and Puelles, 2009]. Recently, Abellan et al [2014] added a new rostral subdivision in the chicken PHi.…”
