catena-Poly[[dicyanamido(5,5′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine-κ2N,N′)copper(II)]-μ-dicyanamido-κ2N1:N5]

Abstract: In the crystal structure of the title compound, [Cu(C(2)N(3))(2)(C(12)H(12)N(2))](n), the Cu(II) atom adopts a distorted square-pyramidal geometry, the basal plane of which is formed by two N atoms of the bipyridine ligand, one N atom of a bidentate dicyanamide anion and one N atom of a monodentate dicyanamide anion [Cu-N = 1.9760(15)-2.0157(15)A]. The apical position is occupied by an N atom of a bidentate dicyanamide anion, located 2.2468(16)A from the Cu atom, thus forming a one-dimensional polymeric chain.

“…This type was previously observed in [M(bpym)(dca) 2 ]ÁH 2 O (M is Mn, Fe or Co, and bpym is 2,2 Hbipyrimidine; Marshall et al, 2000) and is formed by chains in which two hexacoordinated metallic centres are connected by only one bridging dca, while the second remains monodentate. The one-dimensional structure of the title complex, [Cu(bpy)(dca) 2 ], (I), which we present herein as part of our study of low-dimensional magnetic materials (C Ï erna  k et al, 2001), is of this last type, but it contains ®ve-coordinated central atoms and is similar to the very recently published structures of [Cu(dmbpy)(dca) 2 ] (dmbpy is 5,5 H -dimethyl-2,2 Hbipyridine; Kooijman et al, 2002) and [Cu(phen) et al, 2002).…”

“…A one-dimensional coordination polymer thus results in (IV), analogous to that in (I), but whereas the Cu II centres along the polymer chain in (I) are related by translation, those in (IV) are related by a glide plane: the CuÁ Á ÁCu distances along the chain in (IV) were reported as 8.212 (1) (Potočň á k et al, 2002) and 8.1999 (8) Å (Vangdal et al, 2002), slightly longer than the corresponding distance of 7.5946 (5) Å in (I). Chains similar to those in (I) are observed in [Cu(dca) 2 (5,5 0dimethyl-2,2 0 -bipyridyl)], (V) (Kooijman et al, 2002), with a CuÁ Á ÁCu distance between Cu centres related by translation along the chain of 7.5297 (10) Å , and in [Cu(dca) 2 (dpa)], (VI) (dpa is 2,2-dipyridinylamine; Carranza et al, 2002), with an intrachain CuÁ Á ÁCu distance of 7.689 (2) Å .…”

“…In the ®eld of crystal engineering, the number of X-ray crystal structures of compounds with the dca anion showing one-, two-and three-dimensional networks has increased enormously in the last few years (e.g. Kohout et al, 2000;Vangdal et al, 2002;Mohamadou et al, 2003;Kooijman et al, 2002;Shi et al, 2003).…”
