Botrytis euroamericana, a new species from peony and grape in North America and Europe

Abstract: A novel species of Botrytis isolated from peony in Alaska, USA, and grape in Trento District, Italy, was identified based on morphology, pathogenicity, and sequence data. The grape and peony isolates share sequence homology in the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH), heat shock protein 60 (HSP60), DNA-dependent RNA polymerase subunit II (RPB2), and necrosis- and ethylene-inducing protein 1 and 2 (NEP1 and NEP2) genes that place them in a distinct group closely related to B. aclada, a globally dist… Show more

“…Several studies have shown that B. cinerea exists within a morphologically cryptic species complex (Giraud et al ., , ; Albertini et al ., ; Fournier et al ., , ; Walker et al ., ; Lorenzini & Zapparoli, ; Liu et al ., ; Garfinkel et al ., ). Distinguishing different Botrytis species in sympatry and defining their contributions to disease could assist in adapting control strategies (Walker, ).…”

“…Clade I includes the isolates from group I and II species B. californica , B. calthae , B. cinerea , B. eucalypti , B. fabae , B. pelargonii , B. pseudocinerea and B. sinoviticola . Recently, a new clade II Botrytis species, B. euroamericana , was found on grapevine in Italy (Lorenzini & Zapparoli, ; Garfinkel et al ., ).…”

“…The fungal genus Botrytis comprises ~ 35 species, which all interact with plants [1, 2]. With one exception, they are notorious pathogens with a necrotrophic infection behaviour, i.e.…”

“…Pathogenicity tests showed the ability of B. aclada, B. euroamericana, and B. paeoniae to form lesions on faba bean leaves (Garfinkel et al, 2017). B. aclada is a specialized pathogen of onion (Allium cepa) but also could cause primary lesions on the non-host plant that were significantly smaller than B. cinerea, B. euroamericana, and B. paeoniae caused lesions.…”
