Arisaema condaoense V.D. Nguyen was described as a new species from Con Dao National Park, Ba Ria–Vung Tau Province, Vietnam in 2000. However, this species has been suspected of being a form of Arisaema roxburghii Kunth, a species widespread in the whole Indochina and Malay Peninsula. This was due to the original description based on dried specimens with male inflorescences only. Morphological characteristics of female inflorescences, which are of taxonomical importance to identify the species, have not been known. In June 2015, we re-sampled the plant in Con Dao National Park with both male and female inflorescences for detailed examination of morphological characteristics. Besides, the matK gene of the chloroplast genome of this species was sequenced to analyse its phylogenetic relationship with other Arisaema species. The gathered morphological and molecular data indicate that A. condaoense is certainly a distinct species, not a synonym of A. roxburghii. The noted morphological characteristics also provide key differences to distinguish A. condaoense from two other morphologically close species of sect. Fimbriata (i.e A. maxwellii from Thailand and A. pierreanum from Vietnam which also share yellow spathes and several other characteristics in common), which are supported by the molecular data. Thus, the species is endemic to Con Dao National Park in Ba Ria–Vung Tau Province, Vietnam. Furthermore, this study allows us revising the description of A. condaoense with, for the first time, supplemental key taxonomic characteristics and illustrating colourful photographs taken from the fresh materials. A key to all eight known Vietnamese species of sect. Fimbriata is also given.

Context Food security, integral to the UN sustainable development goals, has become a global priority. Only a handful of cultivated species meet 80% of dietary intake, and hence, in future, it may be inadequate to depend only on these crops. Aims Wild germplasm is endowed with desirable traits of relevance to food, health and climate resilience and, hence, there is a need to intensify efforts for bringing wild edible plants into mainstream agriculture. Wild banana (Ensete spp.) is a staple food source besides having bioactive compounds, nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals. Methods Ensete species are cultivated in Asian and African countries, and its cultivation through superior clones is done through conventional methods and plant tissue culture techniques. Despite information on the ecological, social and economic features of Ensete spp., there has been no systematic assessment of their nutritional and other agronomic traits. Key results Herein, we provide a comprehensive account of Ensete sp. conservation, domestication, nutritional profile and medicinal importance as well as documenting the biotechnological approaches and identifying research gaps and prospects of these underutilised species. Conclusion and implications We believe this review could form a baseline resource to aid decision-making for improvement of the crop towards sustainable use and domestication of the species in the global context.

Arisaema vietnamense is described as a new species from Pu Ta Leng Mountain in Tam Duong District of Lai Chau province. This find expands the hitherto Sino-Himalayan distribution of Arisaema sect. Nepenthoidea southwards to Vietnam, adding to the six sections with twenty six species already known for the country. The new taxon is described and illustrated with field photographs of detailed botanical characteristics.
