“…We demonstrated that the increased levels of •NO in the treatment of M. rileyi could have caused the death of the insects, through the oxidative stress mechanism, corroborating with described by Branco et al (2014Branco et al ( , 2016. •NO is potentially toxic, particularly involved with oxidative stress (Moncada & Higgs, 2006).…”

“…The latter includes a group of detoxifying enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase. Previous studies have demonstrated that agrochemicals such as glyphosate (Monserrat et al, 2007;Sies, 1993) and even some natural extracts (Branco et al, 2016(Branco et al, , 2014 are able to cause an imbalance between the production of ROS and the antioxidant system, inducing entomotoxic effects by increasing oxidative stress. Oxidative damage to biomolecules, such as lipid peroxidation and protein modifications, can lead to cell death (Cobb & Cole, 2015).…”

“…The dominant tree species in the studied consortium system is the conifer Araucaria angustifolia, a species that produces insect repellent substances (Branco et al 2014), factor which can contribute to the herbivory of other consorted species that lack such mechanisms. In the insect ecology context, a diversification of the entomofauna is expected within the more diverse agroforestry system, which may be in equilibrium because of the environmental stability (Fazolin 1997).…”

“…This allelopathic potential seems to serve A. angustifolia on the successional dynamics of Araucaria Moist Forests. Our group has investigated the entomotoxic effect of an aqueous extract obtained from bracts of A. angustifolia on the velvetbean caterpillar Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) [20]. This extract, rich in phenolic compounds, was able to increase the number of malformed pupae (0.15, 1.5 and 7.5 mg), along with a decrease in the emergence of the insects (1.5 and 7.5 mg), and these effects were related with the lipid, protein and DNA damage detected in the larvae via oxidative stress.…”

“…Our group has importantly contributions regarding A. angustifolia biological effects. We reported that bracts (sterile seeds) contain high levels of chemical compounds with important pharmacological actions in several models of study [17][18][19][20]. Despite the different extraction conditions employed in distinct studies, phenolic compounds can be regarded as the major constituents in this particular plant.…”
