Ammi visnaga: Composition of the fatty acids present in the seed fat

Abstract: The seed fat of the Umbelliferous plant Ammi visnaga Linn. has been analysed, and the composition of the fatty acids has been shown to be palmitic acid 5%. petroselinic acid 50%. oleic acid 3z%, linoleic acid 13%.This species thus resembles other members of the family Umbelliferae, which are characterized by major proportions of petroselinic acid in the seed fat. The presence of the chromone, khellin, in the seeds has been confirmed.

“…Another study reported that the fruits of A. visnaga contain 7.2% fatty oil, composed mainly of petroselinic acid (76.10%), linoleic acid (15.60%), and palmitic acid (4.58%) (Houachri et al, 2017). Grindley (1950) stated that the fatty oil of A. visnaga fruits contains 5% palmitic acid, 50% petroselinic acid, 32% oleic acid, and 13% linoleic acid. The fatty oil ratio of A. visnaga fruits, in our study, is higher than the values compared to the previous studies, while the fatty acid composition is similar to the values available in the literature.…”

“…The crystalline principles that have been isolated from Ammi visnaga L. and identified and their hydrolysis products are shown in table 1. In general, the fruits contain about 1 per cent of pure khellin, 0.1 per cent of pure visnagin, and 0.3 per cent of pure khellol glucoside (31,41).…”
