HYTHEC: An EC funded search for a long term massive hydrogen production route using solar and nuclear technologies

Abstract: The objective of HYTHEC—HYdrogen THErmo-chemical Cycles—is to investigate the effective potential for massive hydrogen production of the S–I thermo-chemical cycle, and to compare it with the hybrid S Westinghouse (WH) cycle. The project aims to conduct flow-sheeting, industrial scale-up, safety and costs modelling, to improve the fundamental knowledge and efficiency of the S–I cycle H2 production step, and to investigate a solar primary energy source for the H2SO4 decomposition step which is common to both the… Show more

“…The adiabatic UT-3 cycle, the SulfurIodine (SI) and the Hybrigd-Iodine (HI) cycle receive much attention in the literature [64][65][66][67]. These cycles are based on a reaction scheme that incorporates more than three reactions leading to lower inherent efficiencies and high efforts for the product separation after each step.…”

“…In the European project HYTHEC SiC was selected as the material of choice for a solar absorber being at the same time the decomposer for H 2 SO 4 in a receiver-reactor (Le Duigou et al, 2007). This is due to the combination of the above mentioned chemical resistance and thermo-mechanical properties plus its excellent optical properties (high absorptivity for radiation).…”

“…The use of porous ceramics and plate heat exchangers made of SiC means this material may well be suitable as a substrate. HYTHEC has already shown that it is feasible to coat such material with noble metal and iron oxide catalysts exhibiting high and stable activity throughout experimental campaigns (Le Duigou et al, 2007).…”

“…Recently, solar driven evaporation and decomposition have gained attention. Two exemplary research projects funded by the European Commission are HYTEC [31] and HycycleS [32]. Equilibrium calculations of the reaction are shown in figure 1 for 0.1, 1 and 10 bar.…”
