Hypothermia does not influence liver damage and function in a porcine polytrauma model

Abstract: Induction of hypothermia could not significantly improve hepatic damage during the first 48 h following major trauma. Further studies focusing on multi-organ failure including a longer observation period are required to illuminate the impact of hypothermia on hepatic function in multiple trauma patients.

“…While most studies focus on changes within the first hours after trauma [ 11 ], we aimed to investigate the pulmonary inflammatory response (including the effects of induced mild hypothermia) in a clinically relevant porcine model with multiple trauma and moderate (45% blood loss over 90 min) or severe (50% blood loss over 120 min) hemorrhagic shock over 48 hours. Here, we complement findings of our collaborators, whose data demonstrated a time-dependent activation of the inflammatory response to multiple trauma with significant changes in cytokine and alarmin levels, both local (in fracture hematoma and brain tissue) and systemic (in blood serum) [ 24 , 26 29 ].…”

“…During the study, four experimental animals died within the first 12 hours of the study protocol and were excluded from this analysis (two in Trauma 1 NT, two in Trauma 2 HT). Physiological parameters, clinical characteristics, and mortality have previously been described [24,[26][27][28][29].…”

“…The current issues provide examples from a scientifically active and ongoing group named TREAT [18]. This group has been working in multiple research centers, such as Vienna, Marburg, Aachen, Ulm, Frankfurt, Utrecht and Zurich [19][20][21]. The unique feature of this group is a cooperative effort of multiple researchers that have shared the burden of gathering data along with the results of their cooperation.…”
