A 42 day feeding trial involving twenty five, seven weeks old male grass cutters with an initial weight of 604.9 -609.7g was conducted to determine the growth response and carcass characteristics of weaner grass cutters fed diets supplemented with P. longifolia seed oil as a natural growth promoter. Five diets were formulated to contain basal diet + 0% P.longifolia oil and Oxytetracycline for T1 this served as negative control while T2 was fed basal diet containing Oxyteteracycline (synthetic growth promoter) as positive control at 25mg/kg, T3, T4 and T5 were fed basal diet supplemented with P. longifolia oil as natural growth promoter at 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4% respectively. The grass cutters were randomly divided into five groups of five grass cutters each with each grass cutters serving as replicate in a completely randomized design experiment. Feed and clean water were provided ad libitum. There was a significant (P<0.05) differences among the treatments for final live weight, feed conversion ratio, carcass weight and dressing percentage. There was no significant differences (P>0.05) in mortality, feed intake, daily water intake, feed cost per kg and relative weights of the organs examined ( liver, kidney, heart, spleen, testis, intestine and abdominal fat). The result of this study indicates that the inclusion of P. longifolia oil up to 0.40% has no deleterious effect on the performance and health status of grass cutters.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the seeds of Pennisetum glaucum for its blood pressure lowering effect in rats. Aqueous-methanolic extract of P. glaucum seeds in 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg doses was studied in normotensive, egg-feed diet and glucose-induced hypertensive rats using non-invasive technique. The extract significantly (p˂0.5 - p˂0.001) decreased blood pressure and heart rate with maximum effect at 1,000 mg/kg dose. The extract was found to prevent rise in blood pressure of egg and glucose fed rats as compared to control group in 21 days study. The extract was safe in mice up to dose of 4 g/kg and sub-chronic toxicity study showed that there was no significant alterations in blood chemistry of extract treated rats. It is conceivable, therefore, that aqueous-methanolic extract of P. glaucum seeds has exerted considerable antihypertensive activity which may be due to the presence of phytochemical constituents.

The antimicrobial potentiality of Polyalthia longifolia seed oil and its fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) extract was evaluated against multi drug resistant strains of bacteria and fungi of clinical origin. A sensitivity test was performed to determine the resistance pattern for marketed antimicrobial agents against the selected microorganisms. The results of antimicrobial assay revealed that P. longifolia seed oil and its FAME extract were effective against all the microorganisms studied. Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus bovis were observed to be the most susceptible strains. Among the tested Gram-negative bacteria, Klebsiella pneumoniae was found to be the most sensitive, while Salmonella typhimurium was the most resistant bacteria. In the case of Gram-positive bacteria, E. faecalis was the most sensitive, while S. aureus was the most resistant strain. The Candida albicans was found to be highly sensitive to the action of FAME extract with the least minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 19.5 µg/ml. The MIC values were lower than MBC/MFC values suggesting that the P. longifolia seed oil and its FAME extract inhibit the growth of test organisms while being bactericidal/fungicidal at higher concentrations. In addition, the physiochemical properties and fatty acid composition of P. longifolia seed oil were also investigated. Thus, it was found that P. longifolia seed oil offers potential antibacterial property against the reference strains and could be a possible source to obtain new and effective herbal medicines to treat infections caused by multi-drug resistant strains of microorganisms from community as well as hospital settings.
