Hypotensive activity and toxicology of constituents from root bark ofPolyalthia longifolia var.pendula

Abstract: A defatted extract of Polyalthia longifolia var. pendula root bark (PRB) in 50% methanol showed a significant ability to reduce blood pressure. It caused a 22% and 47% fall in mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) in rats at doses of 3 mg/kg and 30 mg/kg, respectively. Compounds purified from this extract include kolavenic acid (3), clerodane (1) and its isomer (2), liriodenine (4), lysicamine (5) and bisclerodane imide (6) and its isomer (7). Of these, only kolavenic acid produced a 22% fall in MABP, at a dose … Show more

“…This could be due to the medicinal nature of P. longifolia, P. longifoliaperforms several functions such as antibacterial, antifungal, anti diabetic, antitumor, anti-ulcer, antioxidant and used in the treatment of the digestive system. Pharmacological studies on the bark and leaves of the plants shows display effective antimicrobial activity (Faizi et al, 2003), cytotoxic function Chen et al, 2006), hypotensive effects (Saleem et al, 2005).…”

“…The bark is used in skin diseases, fever, hypertension, helmenthiasis and is a febrifuge (Rastogi, 1997). Its aqueous extract also lowers the blood pressure and rate of respiration in experimental animals (Saleem et al, 2005). The hypoglycemic and antihyperglycemic activities of various solvent extracts of P. longifolia var.…”
