“…Vaccination may not only reduce the rate of influenza infection but may also prevent the complications of influenza that are not uncommon among immunosuppressed and malnourished patients such as HD patients. Contrary to the study of Washio et al (11), we did not detect hypoalbuminemia as a significant risk factor for complications.…”

“…In the present study, 83 out of 183 HD patients (45.3%) were elderly patients (i.e., 65 years or older), while 12 patients (6.6%) had hypoalbuminemia. There is a close relationship between frailty and nutrition in elderly persons in Japan , and hypoalbumineina increases the risk of pneumonia among the elderly . In the present study, however, neither the proportion of older patients at the age of 65 years old or older nor the rate of hypoalbuminemia differed between the ILI group and the non‐ILI group.…”

“…Although the elderly may have a weakened immune response, there are many reports supporting the effectiveness of influenza vaccinations for the elderly in western countries , as well as in Japan . In our previous studies, influenza vaccination reduced the risk of pneumonia and hospitalization among elderly nursing home residents in winter , and pneumonia acquired outside hospitals among the elderly .…”

“…reported that predictors of aspiration pneumonia in nursing home residents were being bedridden, weight loss, bed mobility and locomotion . In contrast, a poor nutritional status leads to the onset of the infectious disease, lowering ADL in older people . The Geriatric Nutrition Risk Index (GNRI), a new prognostic index of nutrition status‐related complications, is a simple and well‐established measure of the nutritional status and malnutrition in older adults .…”
