Hypnotic Susceptibility: A Factor Analytical Perspective

Abstract: This study sought to identify non-pathological personality dimensions related to hypnotic susceptibility. 53 males and 56 females were given the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire and the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility. One of the 5 varimax rotated factors was significantly related to hypnotic susceptibility. Findings appeared to identify cardinal elements and provide support for a multivariate approach to hypnotic susceptibility.

“…The results of the present study support the utility of the MPI in its predictive applicability to the personality–hypnotic-susceptibility relationship. The finding of heightened susceptibility of the MPI hysteric personality in the HGSHS hetero-hypnosis setting is in accord with prior factor-analytic research that suggests that a social, externally oriented, and dependent type of individual with a concrete or impressionistic thinking style would be related to hypnotizability (Hart et al, 1983; Schwartz & Burdsal, 1977).…”

“…Our predictions are personality-type specific in that we hypothesize that a different personality type will be more hypnotizable in each context.Previous findings from the hypnosis research suggest that the MPT hysteric personality type would be the most prone to heightened hypnotizability in a hetero-hypnosis situational context. In two related studies,Hart, Norman, Brotman, and Payne (1983) andSchwartz and Burdsal (1977) administered the HGSHS and a personality questionnaire.Hart et al used the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire, and Schwartz and…”

“…Infertility is a major health problem [8]. Male infertility is defined as inability on the wife to conceive after six months of unprotected sex in the absence of female cause [9].Subfertility and secondary infertility are developing states after an initial phase of fertility [10].The incidence of infertility is difficult to be determined with precision because the control populations that lack social or artificial constraints on fertility are not easy to find [11].The investigations were only performed when conception had not occurred after a year of unprotected intercourse [12]. Infertility is a significant problem in humans.…”
