Hypertension, pregnancy and weather: is seasonality involved?

Abstract: Conflict of interest: noneObjective: The present study aimed at assessing the association between environmental temperature and the relative humidity of the air with frequency of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Methods: A prospective and retrospective, descriptive, ecological study was held at a teaching maternity in Recife, Brazil. Data from all 26.125 pregnant women admitted between 2000 and 2006 were analysed and 5.051 had the diagnosis of hypertensive disorder of pregnancy. The incidence percentages w… Show more

“…Our region has a high preeclampsia prevalence as comparing to other regions. A previous study in our setting determined an incidence rate of 19.3% of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy [23]. This high incidence could be explained by magnesium deficit but our study with oral magnesium supplementation did not support this hypothesis.…”

“…In Brazil, there have been some studies that associated seasonal temperature variation with gestational hypertension, 4,23 symptoms of stroke, 24,25 respiratory diseases, 26 epistaxis 27 and others that investigated the association between climate and mortality from different diseases in elderly individuals. 28 Only one study 29 approached the subject, when it investigated the effect of water temperature on cardiovascular responses: heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) during exercise at different temperatures (29° C, 33° C and 37° C).…”

“…Essas alterações poderiam sofrer influência dos fatores climáticos, e assim se justificaria o aumento na ocorrência de PE em baixas temperaturas [9][10][11][12][13][14] . Destacamos um estudo brasileiro 15 , realizado no Recife, no qual se observou uma maior a prevalência de DHEG nos meses mais frios.…”
