a b s t r a c tRelativistic energy density functionals (EDF) have become a standard tool for nuclear structure calculations, providing a complete and accurate, global description of nuclear ground states and collective excitations. Guided by the medium dependence of the microscopic nucleon self-energies in nuclear matter, semi-empirical functionals have been adjusted to the nuclear matter equation of state and to bulk properties of finite nuclei, and applied to studies of arbitrarily heavy nuclei, exotic nuclei far from stability, and even systems at the nucleon drip-lines. REDF-based structure models have also been developed that go beyond the static mean-field approximation, and include collective correlations related to the restoration of broken symmetries and to fluctuations of collective variables. These models are employed in analyses of structure phenomena related to shell evolution, including detailed predictions of excitation spectra and electromagnetic transition rates.

We discuss the mass modifications ofD andD * (B and B * ) mesons in nuclear medium. The heavy quark symmetry forD andD * (B and B * ) mesons is adopted, and the interaction between aD orD * (B or B * ) meson and a nucleon is supplied from the pion exchange. We find negative mass shifts forD and B mesons, and hence that theD and B mesons are bound in the nuclear medium. As applications, we consider the atomic nuclei with aD meson, 40 D Ca and 208 D Pb, and investigate the energy levels of theD meson in each nucleus. We also discuss the mass shifts in the isospin asymmetric nuclear medium, and present a possible phenomenon of distribution of isospin density around aD or B meson in nuclear medium. We find that the mass shifts ofD * and B * mesons have large imaginary parts, which would prevent precise study of the energy levels ofD * and B * mesons in nuclei.
