Hyperfine structure of the 7p2P1/2,3/2 levels of115In and the 5p2P1/2 level of27Al

Abstract: The hyperfine structure of the 7p 2P1/2, 3/2 levels of 115in and the 5p 2p1/2 level of 2VA1 has been measured using high-resolution laser spectroscopy on atomic beams. For the magnetic-dipole and electric-quadrupole interaction constants, a and b, the following values were obtained; a(7p 2Pa/2)=90.7(10 ) MHz, a(7p 2P3/2)=32.3(2 ) MHz and b (7p 2P3/2)= 24.5 (1.5) MHz for 11Sin and a (5p 2P1/2)= 20 (2) MHz for 27A1. Many-body calculations on 2p states in aluminum, gallium and indium have also been performed.

“…In the case of the 3d 2 D 3/2 level, the value A = 99 MHz from was confirmed by Zhao et al (1986), but the measured value of B is not large enough to be statistically distinguishable from zero; we therefore set B = 0 for this level. HFS data are only available for two of the upper levels, from Belfrage et al (1984) and .…”

“…Sternheimer pointed out that this Cvalue gives only a rough upper limit, since both the radial and the eXchange terms, which are not included in this factor, tend to decrease C [31]. Recent studies of the 7p and the 8p 2P1/2,3/2 levels of 11Sin [32,33] include a new estimate of the Sternheimer correction factor C=0.87 extrapolated from the chemical homologues gallium and aluminum. A mean value of Q]~5=0.81b is adopted in [33].…”

“…The magnetic dipole interaction constant A of the 5p 2p3/2 state is known from precise ABMR measurements [20] and the hyperfine structure of the 5p 2p3/2--6S 2S1/2 transition from laser spectroscopy data [21,22]. Therefore the calculation of the magnetic dipole moments #~ for the unstable isotopes is straightforward, using the ratio of the Afactors and the known nuclear spins I [33] g Reference [18] c Reference [20] h Reference [26] d This work i Reference [27] Reference [24] J Reference [23] 399 groundstate and excited state hints to a negligible hyperfine anomaly. In almost all cases the agreement with literature values is excellent (see Table 2).…”

“…With the quantum beat method small hfs splittings in higherlying states have also been determined [7][8][9]. Calculations using many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) [10] have given values for the magnetic dipole constant of low-lying states [11]. However, since correlation effects were not included in these calculations large deviations from experimental data were found.…”
