Hyperfine structure measurements in the4 I 9/2 ground state of141Pr

Abstract: Abstract. Using the atomic beam magnetic resonance method, the five hyperfine structure separations in the 4f 3 6s 2 419. 2 ground state of 141 _ 59P1 have been measured. The results are:6477.913423 (17) 6 5 5556.359848 (6) 5 4 4633.023306 (2) 4 3 3708.201146 (5) 3 2 2782.190601 (15) From these quantities, the multipole interaction constants Ak, k = 1, 2, 3, 4 between the nucleus and the electron shell have been calculated. A 4 especially then served to give the following limit for the intrinsic hexadecapo… Show more

“…Stimulated by this fact, during the last few years ABMR-measurements on various isotopes of the rare earth region have been performed with the aim to detect a !6-pole interaction [9,10]. An estimation for the intrinsic 16-pole moment of 141Pr, derived from these experiments, is in accordance with the order of magnitude expected from the escattering experiments, whereas the value for 165Ho of about 10 eb 2 seems to be too big compared to the expected value of 0.4-0.5 eb 2.…”

“…For hfs measurements performed in only one fs state this has been done up until now by using (3) and a set of theoretical hfs interaction parameters a~s, b~s (see e.g. [9,10]). The concept described in this paper now offers the chance to determine experimental a~s, b o in such a case.…”

“…The interaction between the magnetic field and the nuclear magnetic dipole moment pi=gi#NI dominates, but also the interaction between the electric field gradient at the nuclear site and the nuclear quadrupole moment Q gives significant contributions to the hfs. The effects of the higher-order nuclear moments on the hfs are very difficult to measure [15] and they will not be considered here. In a nonrelativistic treatment the hyperfine Hamiltonian, which acts on all electrons in the wave function, is, using atomic units…”

“…Praseodymium (Pr) is one of the rare Earth elements with a commonly open 4f electron shell. 141 Pr 59 is the only stable isotope that occurs naturally, with electronic ground state [Xe] 4f 3 6s 2 , 4I o 9/2 , nuclear magnetic dipole moment μ 1 =4.2754 (5) μ N , nuclear spin quantum number I=5/2 [1] and nuclear electric quadrupole moment Q=−0.0024b [2]. Pr is very rich in optical spectrum.…”
