Hypercholesterolemia Is Correlated With an Increased Risk of Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Abstract: A diagnosis of HCh may indicate an independent risk for ISSNHL. This finding suggests that an underlying vascular mechanism contributes to the development of ISSNHL. We suggest that physicians counsel patients with HCh to seek medical attention if they have hearing impairments, because they may also have an increased risk of developing ISSNHL.

“…Several prognostic factors are reported to predict the outcome of hearing recovery for ISSNHL patients, including age, the presence or absence of vertigo, the type and severity of hearing loss, hypertension, the shape of the audiogram and the timeliness of initial treatment . Recently, some biochemical parameters have been indicated as prognostic factors, including hyperglycaemia, platelet wide length, neutrophil counts and hypercholesterolaemia …”

“…Patients who had at least three ambulatory medical care visits and a principle diagnosis of SSNHL provided by an otolaryngologist in the referral teaching hospitals and tertiary referral medical centers to validate the diagnosis, which might be expected to provide adequate diagnostic accuracy. This method of identifying these diseases has been used extensively in various studies of Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, and many articles have been published (32)(33)(34). Another limitation is the difficulty in documenting the finer clinical details, such as cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, family history, noise exposure, and changes in BMD in the analysis.…”
