Hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Part 2: application in disease

Abstract: There is a substantial body of literature that has examined the adverse and beneficial effects of HBOT in animal models. As technology becomes more readily available to clinical practice and more clinical trials are performed to define its effectiveness, HBOT may be considered as an additional therapeutic option in many conditions including select problem wounds, spinal cord injury, and cerebral ischemic injury. Understanding the mechanisms by which HBOT exerts its effects will help guide research and use of t… Show more

“…Koristi se kao terapija kod različitih stanja: hronične rane koje teško zarastaju, infekcije (posebno one uzrokovane anaerobnim uzročnicima), edem tkiva različite etiologije, ishemijska oštećenja tkiva, anemije i dr. [1][2][3][4][5]. Mehanizmi dejstva HBOT na ljudski organizam su kompleksni i nedovoljno istraženi.…”

“…Increasing the atmospheric pressure at which it is delivered, increases the amount of dissolved oxygen in the plasma allowing deeper penetration into the tissue (Henry's Law). Therefore, tissues can be adequately oxygenated in the absence of a blood flow, a particular advantage in organ preservation [114,115]. Although an interesting concept and benefits have been demonstrated in liver and bowel transplantation, there has been little evidence of its use in kidney preservation in recent times.…”

“…Hyperbaric oxygenation is normally used to treat decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas embolism, circulatory disorders and to promote wound healing [114][115][116]. However, it has been used in organ preservation.…”

“…The physiologic effects of HBO are reported to have many different mechanisms including intravascular and tissue gas bubble reduction, improved tissue oxygenation, vasoconstriction, increased antimicrobial activity, modulation of inflammation and immune function, promotion of angiogenesis and the above mentioned increased bone turnover [16]. As the knowledge of which clinical protocol of HBO to use for best efficacy is not yet evaluated and there are known side-effects of HBO (mainly oxygen seizures), it is important to study the basic physiological reactions to HBO in humans.…”
