“…Literature on the effect of HBO on bone turnover and micro-architecture in irradiated mandibles is scarce though, and solely reported from animal studies. Spiegelberg et al demonstrated that HBO therapy positively influenced the micro-architectural parameters of irradiated mandibular cancellous bone in mice (Spiegelberg et al, 2015). HBO completely normalized values for BV/TV, trabecular separation, trabecular thickness and porosity in irradiated bone, but trabecular number remained significantly increased in irradiated bone.…”

“…HBO 2 decreased the inflammation and accelerated the bone formation after acute injury to the femur in a rat model (Rocha et al , ). In a higher‐fidelity model of human ORN, a murine model of mandibular radiation damage found that HBO 2 improved the parameters associated with bone health, including decreased osteoclast numbers, increased bone viability, and increased bone volume (Spiegelberg et al , ). HBO 2 may also lead to increased testosterone levels (Passavanti et al , ) that could affect the bone health.…”

“…Regarding the treatment of ORN, several methods have been suggested depending on the presence of a necrotic lesion, the response to conservative nonsurgical treatment, the patient's general health, the prognosis for successful treatment of cancer, the patient's wishes, the irradiation dose and the time interval between RT and ORN development (Epstein et al, 1987a, Notani et al, 2003, Spiegelberg et al, 2015. The treatment methods are divided into two main categories: conservative treatment (improvement of oral hygiene and administration of antibiotics, analgesics and HBO) and surgical treatment (Ioannides et al, 1994, Maurer et al, 2002, Raghoebar et al, 2005, KalantarHormozi and Khorvash, 2006.…”
