Hyper-fast gas chromatography and single-photon ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry with integrated electrical modulator-based sampling for headspace and online VOC analyses

Abstract: We developed a novel fast gas chromatography (fastGC) instrument with integrated sampling of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and detection by single-photon ionisation (SPI) time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS).

“…There was also the combination of GC × GC-TOF-MS and SIFT-MS for breath analysis [ 99 ]. Moreover, fast GC techniques are being developed that allow sufficiently short run times to be achieved that are in the range minutes to seconds, thus achieving close to real-time analysis [ 100 ].…”

“…In 2016, Jia and co-workers published the comparison of different EGA–PIMS platforms for studying biomass pyrolysis and concluded the problem of isomeric speciation solved in sophisticated SVUV approaches by scanning photon energies . Isomeric identification can also be addressed in the reactor or thermal analysis coupled to fast gas chromatography, which needs to be further explored in the future. ,, …”

Interestingly, this concept was prevalent almost half a century ago but might experience a comeback.…”

“…Gas chromatography (GC) is widely used for the analysis of gaseous mixtures in various applications. [1][2][3] The stationary phases of most commercial GC columns, such as polymers 4 (i.e. HT-5, 5% phenyl, polycarborane siloxane; DB1, dimethylpolysiloxane) or porous solid absorbents, 5 are primarily based on their capability to selectively retain gaseous molecules.…”
