Hygienic coatings with bioactive nano-additives from Senna occidentalis-mediated green synthesis

Abstract: Nowadays urban populations spend 90% of their time in buildings where microbial growth lead to hazardous environments which produce health problems characterized by irritation of the respiratory tract, infections, allergies and asthma. Some research lines seek to obtain antimicrobial materials to prevent such health problems. Green synthesis of different nanoparticles was carried out to explore their antimicrobial potential. Solutions of silver, copper, cerium, lanthanum and zinc salts were used as source of m… Show more

“…A promising method to prevent biofilm formation from an early stage is the use of antimicrobial surfaces. Surfaces doped with antimicrobial elements (such as copper, silver, and zinc) are developed to surpass antibiotic delivery deficiencies [ 170 , 171 , 172 ]. The latest tendency in biomaterial science is the combination of polymeric and ceramic materials.…”

“…Plant-based materials such as starch are preferred as food packaging film due to their homogeneous matrices [ 45 ]. However, in recent times, plant oils such as acylated palm olein (APO), acylated jatropha oil (AEJO), and acrylated epoxidized palm oil (AEPO) have been used and modified to exhibit high yield and better performance, such as UV-curable and high-hardness surface coatings [ 46 ].…”

“…Nanomaterials, considered as such because of the range of their dimensions between 1 and 100 nm, are the object of study of current research due to the new characteristics of these materials and their potential applications in areas such as medicine [ 1 , 2 ], industry [ 3 , 4 ], agriculture [5] , biosensors, among others [6] , [7] , [8] . However, technological progress has also led to a change in the characteristics of particle contamination, especially those of nanometric sizes, as they generate new and varied chemical compositions, requiring an intelligent design that not only offers benefits but also limits adverse impacts on health and the ecosystem [9] , [10] , [11] .…”
