Hydroxylated Sclerosporin Derivatives from the Marine-Derived Fungus Cadophora malorum

Abstract: The marine-derived fungus Cadophora malorum was isolated from the green alga Enteromorpha sp. Growth on a biomalt medium supplemented with sea salt yielded an extract from which we have isolated sclerosporin and four new hydroxylated sclerosporin derivatives, namely 15-hydroxysclerosporin (2), 12-hydroxysclerosporin (3), 11-hydroxysclerosporin (4) and 8-hydroxysclerosporin (5). The compounds were evaluated in various biological activity assays. Compound 5 showed a weak fat-accumulation inhibitory activity agai… Show more

“…768) obtained from the red alga Acanthaphora spicifera (collected in Apra Harbor, Guam) yielded four new 10membered lactones (34)(35)(36)(37) [23]. From the same fungus, the novel macrolide apralactone A (38), a 14-membered phenyl acetic acid macrolactone, as well as the antipodes of curvularin macrolides (39)(40)(41)(42)(43)(44) were also isolated and were found to be cytotoxic towards human tumor cell lines [24]. The fungus Coniothyrium cereal, isolated from the green alga Enteromorpha sp.…”

“…(source not given), was the source of four new hydroxylated sclerosporin derivatives, 15-hydroxysclerosporin (90), 12-hydroxysclerosporin (91), 11-hydroxysclerosporin (92), and 8-hydroxysclerosporin (93). 8-Hydroxysclerosporin (93) showed a weak fat-accumulation inhibitory activity against 3T3-L1 murine adipocytes [41]. Chemical investigations of the fungus Verticillium tenerum derived from an unknown marine alga (source not given) yielded two new hydroxylated bisabolane-type sesquiterpenes, verticinols A (94) and B (95) [42].…”

“…The metabolites derived from endophytes collected from marine green algae presented, in general, bicyclical structures with some oxygenations or even aromatic moieties, demonstrating cytotoxicity, antiprotozoa and antimicrobial activities (Elsebai et al, 2010;Zhu et al, 2009;El-Beih et al, 2007;Osterhage et al, 2000), besides fat-accumulation inhibitory activity (Almeida et al, 2010), modulation of carcinogen metabolizing enzymes and protection from DNA damage (Gamal-Elden et al, 2009). …”
