Hydrothermal Synthesis and Characterization of Bi2Fe4O9 Nanoparticles

Abstract: Sheet-like Bi2Fe4O9 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by a rather facile hydrothermal process. Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) studies show that the particles are sheet-like, about 30 nm in the direction of thickness. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that the as-prepared particles were pure Bi2Fe4O9, but after storing at room temperature for half a year, γ-Fe2O3 appeared. The magnetic properties of the nanoparticles before and after stor… Show more

“…A large family of oxides, which includes not only perovskites but also more complex structures, e.g., sillenites, has recently attracted interest due to their physical properties and technological applications [2,3]. Sillenites exhibit various properties such as photorefractivity, photoconductivity, and enhanced velocity of ultrasound wave propagation, and such properties have potential applications.…”

“…Up to now, the preparation of nanostructured Bi 2 Fe 4 O 9 has been mainly based on the hydrothermal process [10,11,[20][21][22][23], sol-gel template method [24], and molten salt technique [25]. In the aspect of morphology control, the hydrothermal route offers an advantage over other preparation techniques; however, the products obtained from the method tend to have a fairly large particle size, and furthermore a cumbersome abstersion process is generally required to clean out impurities.…”

“…[1,2] The sillenites, with the general formula Bi 12 MO 20 (M = Ge, Ti, Ga, Fe, Bi, V, etc. ), exhibit various properties such as photorefractivity, optical activity, photoconductivity, piezomodulus, and an enhanced velocity of ultrasound wave propagation; these properties have potential applications in electro-optics, acoustics, and piezotechnics.…”
