Hydrophobic resin treatment of hydrothermal autohydrolysate for prebiotic applications

Abstract: ∼30% of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) in autohydrolysate are likely bonded to lignin “tied,” contributing to loss during resin purification. Loss of “free” XOS depends on DP.

“…Although the resin was able to recover 98 % of lignin in the hydrolysate, XADL contained a very high amount of carbohydrates (Table ). While the inclusion of some oligomeric xylan in XADL cannot be ruled out, these results indicate the possibility of the involvement of LCC in the resolution of lignin during hydrothermal pretreatment.…”

“…The adsorbent resins were pretreated before use to remove preservative salts and impurities if any. Resin was washed thoroughly with methanol at 30 min intervals between subsequent cycles, followed by distilled water wash . The resin was then dried for 24 h at 50 °C.…”

“…The adsorbent resins were pretreated before use to remove preservative salts and impurities if any. Resin was washed thoroughly with methanol at 30 min intervals between subsequent cycles, followed by distilled water wash. 43 The resin was then dried for 24 h at 50 °C. Hydration of the resins was carried out with absolute ethanol owing to their hydrophobic character making permeation easier.…”

“…XOS prebiotics are a value-added product from lignocellulosic bioreneries based on autohydrolysis or related pretreatment technologies. 117 When using XOS as a food additive, the residual lignin in the XOS can also alter the human intestinal tract and play an anti-tumor role.…”
