Hydrophobic Modification of Cellulose Nanocrystals from Bamboo Shoots Using Rarasaponins

Abstract: Because of their hydrophilic tendencies, the modification of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) is needed for applying them as a hydrophobic drug carrier. Previous studies have investigated several modification agents, such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. Natural surfactants, such as rarasaponins (RSs), are suitable to avoid human health and environmental issues. In this work, RSs were attached onto CNCs from bamboo shoots to enhance their hydrophobicity. The initial RS concentration and the operating temperatur… Show more

“…A UV/Vis spectrophotometer was then used to measure the remaining CV concentration in the solution at a maximum wavelength of 590 nm. The amount of adsorbed CV on the ZIF-L was calculated by the following equation [ 41 ]: where and are the initial and remaining CV concentrations (in mg/L), while and are the volume of the CV solution and the mass of ZIF-L. The adsorption was performed for all of the ZIF-L obtained from the combined synthesis parameters.…”

“…Recent studies more developed the modification or functionalization of CNCs for enhancing the ability as a drug carrier. Several compounds have been used to modify the surface of CNCs, such as surfactants, small molecule compounds, oils, and polymers [ 70 ]. The main aim of surface modification is to change the characteristics of CNCs, especially from hydrophilic to hydrophobic CNCs.…”

“…However, the selection of modifying agents is needed to be considered carefully in case of health and environmental issues. As an example, rarasaponins was chosen as a modifying agent for CNCs due to its safety for health and environment, where it is biodegradable and non-toxic surfactant from natural resources [ 70 , 71 ].…”

“…The surface modification of CNCs can not only retain the original properties of CNCs, but also give new surface properties, such as hydrophobic [ 53 , 54 ], biocompatibility [ 55 ], antistatic properties [ 56 , 57 ], and dyeing properties [ 58 ]. The surface of the CNCs contains numerous hydroxyl (–OH) groups, which provide the main reaction site for modification.…”
