“…The Chukchi Sea is a productive (Grebmeier et al 2006), shallow system that is supplemented by nutrients (Weingartner 1997;Weingartner et al 2013) and fauna (Walsh et al 1989) of Bering Sea origin. The high local production, external nutrient input, and small-scale oceanographic processes drive the strong delivery of carbon to the benthos in the Chukchi Sea (Grebmeier et al 2006), which creates positive growth conditions for benthic macrofauna (Feder et al 1994a;Blanchard et al 2013;Blanchard and Feder 2014).…”

“…These northward-flowing water masses encounter cold, hyper-saline 128 bottom water and fresh meltwater from arctic pack ice, which can strongly influence water 129 column stratification (Weingartner et al, 2013) and the formation of thermohaline fronts that Diomede and Little Diomede islands (USFWS, 2014). A colony with ~ 51 000 seabirds is 159 located on an island at the head of Kotzebue Sound (Fig.…”

“…West of the ACC mean currents in summer are generally 65 cm s À1 as Bering Sea water gradually flushes the shelf of waters stratified due to ice melt (Weingartner et al, 2013). The ACC flows along the Alaskan coast toward Barrow Canyon (Mountain et al, 1976;Paquette and Bourke, 1981;Weingartner et al, 2013) where its entrance into the Arctic varies depending on the wind (Okkonen et al, 2009). Upon reaching the edge of the shelf some Pacific Water is also channeled eastward as a shelfbreak jet, although in recent years much of this water has apparently been advected directly into Canada Basin (Brugler et al, 2014).…”
