The Landshut bentonites that formed from Ca- and Mg-poor rhyolitic tuffs in a fluviatile-lacustrine depositional environment of the Miocene Upper Freshwater Molasse, southern Germany, contain abundant palustrine, pedogenic and groundwater carbonates. Geochemical analyses of dolomites, calcites and smectites from bentonites of various environments by X-ray diffraction, thermal ionization mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, and handheld X-ray fluorescence yield new insights into the compositions of fluids and sources of imported components involved in carbonate formation and bentonitization, as well as the timing of bentonite formation. Evaporated, Sr-rich brackish surface water with a molar Mg/Ca ratio of 2–5, derived mostly from the weathering of detrital carbonates, was involved in dolomite and bentonite formation in palustrine and some pedogenic environments. However, Sr-poor groundwater with a molar Mg/Ca ratio of ∼ 1 and a stronger silicate weathering component caused bentonite and calcite formation in strictly pedogenic and groundwater settings. The 87Sr/86Sr and molar Mg/Ca in the smectite interlayers indicate later cation exchange with water having more radiogenic Sr sources and smaller molar Mg/Ca ratios. The Rb-Sr data indicate the common presence of detrital illitic phases in the <0.2 μm fractions of the bentonites. Cogenetic palustrine dolomite and a single smectite residue sample which lacks this detrital illitic phase provide an age constraint for bentonitization at 14.7 ± 4.1 Ma identical to primary ash deposition. Thus a rapid onset of bentonitization of accumulated ash and dolomite formation in evaporation-driven wetland environments is indicated for the genesis of the Landshut bentonites.

ZusammenfassungIn Quellwasserproben rund um den Ringseitert-Vulkankomplex südöstlich der Gemeinde Kirchweiler (Westeifel) wurden weit über dem Geringfügigkeitsschwellenwert erhöhte Vanadiumkonzentrationen mit einem Maximalwert von 28 μg/l nachgewiesen. Generell zeigten die im Bereich der Känozoischen Vulkanite entnommenen Wasserproben erheblich höhere Konzentrationen als die im umliegenden Paläozoikum. Lokale Vulkanitproben weisen bis zu vierfach über dem Krustenmittel erhöhte Gesamtgehalte an Vanadium auf. Elutionsuntersuchungen ergaben eine erhöhte Vanadiumfreisetzung. Zur weiteren mikroanalytischen Suche nach der geogenen Quelle für diese Anomalie wurden Dünnschliffe der Gesteinsproben hergestellt und mittels Elektronenmikrosonde analysiert. Die Elementverteilungsbilder zeigten nicht die erwartete Korrelation zwischen den Elementen Fe und V, wohl jedoch eine Korrelation zwischen P und V. Hotspot-Analysen von V-reichen Mineralkörnern weisen auf das Mineral Fluorapatit mit bis zu 5 Gew.-% Vanadat als Substitution für das Phosphat als geogene Vanadiumquelle in den Vulkaniten hin. Eine hydrogeochemische Modellierung mit PhreePlot zeigt übereinstimmend, dass die Wasserproben mit erhöhten Vanadiumkonzentrationen alle im pe/pH-Prädominanzfeld der Vanadat(V)-Komplexe liegen. Vanadium in groundwater of the Eifel volcanic area, GermanyAbstract Elevated vanadium concentrations of up to 28 µg/l were found in spring waters of the western Eifel volcanic area, Germany. The spatial distribution of the water samples indicates higher V concentrations in Cenozoic vulcanite than in neighboring Paleozoic areas. X-ray fluorescence analyses of the volcanic rock samples revealed a V enrichment up to four-fold above average earth crust values. Water elution tests showed enhanced mobility of the V inventory. Microprobe element mapping with thin slices of the volcanic rocks showed no correlation between Fe and V but revealed a spatial correlation between P and V. Microprobe chemical analysis of V-rich hot spots revealed V-bearing fluorapatite with up to 5% of the phosphate substituted by vanadate. Fluorapatite micro-grains are abundant in the rocks and may well represent a geogenic source for the V contamination of the groundwater. Hydrogeochemical modeling using PhreePlot shows the vanadate (V) species which dominate the V-enriched water samples.

Für den Geotechnischen Bericht ist die Grundwasserbeschaffenheit anhand der Konzentration von Magnesium, Sulfat, Ammonium und kalklösender Kohlensäure nach DIN 4030‐1 hinsichtlich der Betonaggressivität zu beurteilen. Diese kann einen erheblichen Kostenfaktor darstellen, da bei einer erhöhten Betonaggressivität einige geotechnische Rückverankerungssysteme ausgeschlossen werden müssen. Zudem sind zum Teil bereits früh im Planungsprozess wegweisende Entscheidungen zur Bauplanung und ‐ausführung zu treffen, die sich aus der Grundwasserbeschaffenheit ergeben. Mithilfe eines Geoinformationssystems (GIS) werden auf Grundlage des Web‐Map‐Service „Hintergrundwerte im Grundwasser“, der über das Geoportal der Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR) frei zur Verfügung steht, die Konzentrationsverteilungen der relevanten Wasserinhaltsstoffe in Form von Themenkarten einzeln und für die in DIN 4030‐1 festgelegten Expositionsklassen aggregiert dargestellt. Diese Karten können zur Plausibilisierung von Analyseergebnissen und zur Voreinschätzung der Betonaggressivität genutzt werden. Zudem ergibt eine räumliche Auswertung, dass in Deutschland betonaggressives Wasser v. a. auf erhöhte Sulfatkonzentrationen bzw. eine erhöhte Konzentration an kalklösender Kohlensäure sowie eine Kombination von beiden Wasserinhaltsstoffen zurückzuführen ist. Im Gegensatz dazu spielen sowohl Magnesium als auch Ammonium für die Betonaggressivät des Grundwassers nur eine untergeordnete Rolle.
