A total, 25 different ground-water samples collected in Mundaragi taluk in of Gadag district, Karnataka, India to appraise the distribution of Fluoride. pH of collected groundwater is shown alkaline in nature and ranged between 7.18 and 9.32 with a mean value of 8.36. Fluoride content ranged between 0.86 to 4.63 mg/L in ground water samples, with minimum value 0.86 mg/L (MGK24) and maximum value 4.63 mg/L (MGK20). 48% of samples indicated fluoride content below 1.4 mg/L and 32% samples indicated fluoride content in between 2.0 and 3.0 mg/L. Followed by 8% of the samples showed fluoride content ranges above 3.1. The public from villagers have been used high fluoride-bearing groundwater for drinking prolonged period and suffering from fluorosis. Analytical values also predict that occurrence of minerals like apatite, fluorspar, topaz and mica gets processed naturally and releases fluoride into the lithosphere and percolates into ground water. The present study also helps find out a suitable adsorbent for removal of Fluoride in ground water. However, with respect to chemistry of water, the cation and anion balance of all the 25 groundwater samples were inside the recognized limit of ±10%. The fluoride content is maximum in Na + -3 HCO − type and low in Ca 2+ -3 HCO − type groundwater in the Mundaragi Taluk. Furthermore, F − shown a significant positive correlation with pH, EC, TDS, Ca 2+ , 3 HCO − and negative correlation with Mg 2+ and 3 NO − , which shows that the alkaline condition of water is the key role for leachate forming of fluoride-bearing minerals. Gibbs chart shows all groundwater values are fall under dominance of rock weathering group with a tendency towards the evaporation dominance class. In total, 123 groundwater samples were collected to evaluate the suitability for drinking purpose in a rural part of Andhra Pradesh, India. The groundwater is alkaline in nature and pH varying from 7.18 to 9.32 with a mean value of 8.36. The hydrogeochemical analysis reveals that the fluoride concentration varies from 0.4 to 5.8 mg/L with a mean of 1.98 mg/L. Higher fluoride concentration is found in west-central parts of Markapur region. The villagers have been exposed to the intake of high fluoride-bearing groundwater for the prolonged period and suffering from the deadly disease fluorosis. However, with respect to groundwater chemistry, the fluoride concentration is high in Na + -HCO 3 − -type groundwater and low in Ca 2+ -HCO 3 − -type groundwater in the Markapur region. Data plotted in Gibbs diagram show that all groundwater samples fall under rock weathering dominance group with a trend toward the evaporation dominance category. Therefore, rock-water interaction is the primary cause of elevated fluoride in the groundwater of the study region. Furthermore, a significant positive correlation exists between F − and pH, HCO 3 as well as negative correlation exists between Fand Ca 2+ and NO 3 − , which supports that the alkaline nature of water is the main cause for dissolving fluoride-bearing minerals.

The general properties and overall chemical quality for potability of groundwater in Ahafo-Ano South District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana have been evaluated. With respect to pH, about 92% of groundwaters were potable while 8% were acidic and not potable. Approximately 4%, 32%, 56% and 8% of sampled groundwater were soft, moderately soft, hard and very hard respectively. The overall chemical quality analysis of groundwaters showed that 20%, 28%, 40%, 4% and 8% had excellent, good, poor, very poor and unsuitable drinking water qualities respectively. Approximately 12%, 40% and 84% of As, Ni and Pb exceeded their respective WHO limits while 32% of Cd and Fe exceeded their respective limits for potable water. These higher concentrations of heavy metals were observed to have occurred in communities with intensive illegal gold mining operations. Inhabitants in these areas could potentially be more predisposed to potential health hazards including cancer, nervous system damage, low IQ in children, reduced growth of foetus and premature birth in pregnant women, and kidney damage. It is expected that illegal artisanal gold mining activities will be banned while policies aimed at providing alternative livelihood be instituted to minimize any potential health hazards on humans in the District.
